Securing the bag – a Telfar bag, to be more exact – is like getting Coachella tickets. Everyone wants them; everyone is excited; each must patiently wait for their turn. And, in many cases, not everyone will get them. At least that’s my experience trying to secure the large dark olive green shopping bag over the past two and a half years, and more recently the large yellow shopping bag after seeing Dua Lipa carrying it as hand luggage. .
Telfar Clemens, a black designer, founded the gender-neutral brand Telfar in 2004. The brand produces hats, denim and their famous It bag: The Telfar shopping bag, introduced in 2014, which features a stylish logo and has been dubbed ” the Bushwick Birkin “. ”
I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Telfar Clemens yet, but the designer’s impact on me and the rest of the black community is monumental. Clemens gave us an It bag with all the luxury fabric, an assertive logo and durability for a fraction of the price. As a champion of black and LGBTQ + communities, Clemens’ approach to inclusivity can perhaps best be summed up in the brand’s slogan: “It’s not for you, it’s for everyone. . ”
I couldn’t be happier for all of their success; it’s been a long time coming. At the same time, the transition from fan to owner has been incredibly difficult. Usually new colors and sizes drop every month and for reasons I don’t understand I’m always the last to know. But I think that’s what’s amazing about the bags. Crafted from vegan leather and branded with a “T” logo, the bags are an instant status symbol. Owning one of those hard-to-obtain bags is a celebration in its own right. Not to mention that the price is unprecedented for It bags, which cost less than $ 300 (or more precisely $ 157 to $ 257).
Every time I’m ready to make a purchase, the bags run out. But that is all changing for me and for others, hopefully, buyers today. In response to frustrated future owners (including me!), Teflar is launching the Telfar Safety Bag Program on Wednesday as a way for anyone who wants bags to be able to buy them.
“We’re not talking about hype and scarcity. We didn’t want to create an unobtainable product. The point of our bag is accessibility and community,” the brand explained on its website. With more and more people purchasing black-owned products in light of the Black Lives Matter movement, the brand has received an influx of sales and the product remains out of stock for a large percentage of potential customers. Fans are increasingly frustrated. #Telfar even had a negative trend on Twitter because buyers reacted to not being quick enough on a downturn.
And so, they created the program. For 24 hours only, shoppers will be able to pre-order an unlimited number of bags in any color and size of their choice. Shopping bags are guaranteed to be delivered between December 15 and January 15 and are non-refundable, without cancellation. The brand asks you to recheck your order several times before submitting it as there will be no room for changes. You will receive an email the minute your order ships.
Personally, I am delighted that this program exists! It brings me a little closer to finally owning a Telfar bag. If you too are completely and utterly obsessed with Telfar, scroll down to check out all of the bags we have our eye on. See you online Wednesday!
